Abstract
There are many ways to establish pastures. Typically the more energy that is invested in cultivation, the better the chances are of creating a good seedbed for seed soil contact. This is a key criterion for successful germination and establishment, along with adequate soil moisture, nutrients and appropriate rainfall. Full cultivation and precision planting, minimum tillage, strip planting, use of crocodile planters, blade ploughing and drum seeders, clearing/chaining with seed boxes attached to dozers, the use of fi re (ash as a seed bed), and broadcasting and aerial seeding are some of the methods used for planting and establishing pastures.
