[Extract] The mysterious chemistry of public opinion decreed that during the closing decades of Evelyn Waugh's life, and for many years after his death, he would be, as Frederick Raphael put it in a prominent article, "The Artist as a Bad Man". Criticism in the literary pages became routinely, often ludicrously, personal.
