Abstract
[Extract] The Department of Natural Resources (Mareeba office) has commissioned the Australian Centre for Tropical Freshwater Research at James Cook University to provide a training course on bioaccumulation as part of a Natural Heritage Trust funded project to establish baseline data on the condition of aquatic habitats in the Mitchell River catchment in north Queensland. Bioaccumulation is a large topic but the intended program is likely to have a focus on determining whether aquatic organisms pose any threat to human health. This aspect is thus focused upon in this course although other objectives such as ecosystem health and determining contamination sources are also covered. This course handbook is not intended to be a reference source for bioaccumulation, but rather a summary of the issues covered during the course. Much of the content of the course will be dictated by the desires of the participants with regard to the type of monitoring they program they wish to implement. The course itself is very much focused on the specific monitoring program being proposed for the Mitchell River catchment.
