Abstract

[Extract] The Australian Centre for Tropical Freshwater Research (ACTFR) has been commissioned by the Department of Environment (DoE) to undertake an assessment of key waterways between just south of the town of Cardwell, and just north of the Daintree River. To be considered are waterways east of the coastal ranges, but only those sections of waterways that are not predominantly estuarine, or in protected areas (eg: National Parks, State Forests, WTWHA). The purpose of this report is to identify the important freshwater habitats within this geographic area. Freshwater habitats are taken to include rivers, creeks, lagoons, wetlands, swamps and their associated riparian habitats. The major output of this report are the accompanying 1:50,000 scale maps that mark these key aquatic habitats, and Table 1, which summarises the key aquatic habitats and the ratings (from 1-5) they were given.
