Abstract
A study on the effects of season, sampling time, sex and age-group on some adaptive physiological parameters of Yankasa sheep was carried out at Shika, in the sub-humid zone of Nigeria. Pulse rate (P) and rectal temperature (T) were significantly lower (P<0.05) in the hot-dry season than in the cold-dry season (87.6" 4.46 vs 106.0" 4.46 beats/min) and (38.7" 0.23 vs 39.3" 0.23°C, respectively). Respiratory rate (R) was higher (P<0.01) in the hot-dry season than in the cold-dry season (61.8 vs 44.9 breaths/min) respectively. P and R were higher (P<0.05) in males than in females (98.1" 3.21 vs 95.4" 3.21 beats/min and 55.0" 2.63 vs 51.7" 2.63 breaths/min respectively). T was not influenced by sex (P>0.05). P was highest (P<0.001) in lambs, followed by weaners and then adults (105.9" 5.11 vs 95.l" 5.11 vs 87.6" 5.11 beats/min, respectively). R was highest (P<0.001) in lambs, followed by adults and then weaners (78.1" 4.13 vs 61.8" 4.13 vs 60.1" 4.13breaths/min). However, T was not influenced by age-group (P>0.05). Time of sampling was significant (P<0.001) with higher P values in the morning than in the afternoon but for Rand T, the afternoon samplings were higher than the morning samplings.
