Abstract
Wedepohl (1991) proposed new estimation on the composition of the continental crust, and estimated the proportion between lower crust and upper crust to be 57:43. The lower crust is composed of felsic granulite (60%) and mafic granulite (40%). The newly estimated composition is between andesite and tonalite. The concentration of Si, K, Rb, Sr, Zr, Nb, Ba, LREE, Pb, and Th is higher than the estimate of Tayler et al (1985), whereas the concentrations of Mg, Ca, Sc, Mn and Fe are lower. If 12.5% of S-type granite is put back to lower crust, then the felsic part of the lower crust and upper crust will have the same composition. The mass balance of the Ivrea district in northern Italy by Schnetger (1988) supported this. When sediments convert from amphibolite facies to granulite facies, water unsaturated partial melting may occur which may cause the loss of ~35% material as granite. Wedepohl (1991) believed that the differences between lower crust and upper crust have been gradually increased from pre-Cambrian to the present. The upper crust has larger Eu negative anomaly whereas the lower crust has positive Eu anomaly; the latter is about half the size of the former. The difference between the positive and negative anomalies is important. The Archean crust and post-Archean crust are believed to be having no systematic differences.
