Abstract

[Extract] Research in Australia indicates that increased age fragility are determinants for older people requiring supported living accomodation such as hospitals, nursing homes, and aged and disability hotels (ABS, 2007). The majority of older people aged 65 and over, however, live in households alone or with others, including partners. The needs of older people living in the community and in residential care are diverse and multifaceted. This chapter outlines the major health issues for older people living in Australia and New Zealand, including health status, access to health, and wellness and nutrition. Health promotion strategies for older people are suggested and examples provided.
