Abstract
Population outbreaks of crown-of-thorns sea star (Acanthaster planci L.) represent one of the most significant, but also least understood, processes affecting coral reef ecosystems. Although outbreaks of A. planci continue to occur throughout the Indo-Pacific region and contribute greatly to coral loss and reef degradation, recent research on coral reef disturbances has become much more focused on new and emerging threats, mostly associated with global climate changes. Prominence given to climate change in the last decade has largely detracted from awareness and understanding of A. planci outbreaks. The most important problem is the lack of robust information and convincing evidence to support alternative theories regarding the cause of Acanthaster planci outbreaks. It is clear however, that outbreaks of A. planci are having devastating effects on coral reefs, and potentially undermining resilience and adaptive capacity of reef assemblages. There is a definite impetus therefore, to control outbreaks of A.planci whenever and wherever possible.
