Abstract

According to Goodwin (2011) crime writers are the new travel writers with bookshops organising their detective novels by country, a plethora of websites devoted to listing the crime novels associated with different locations, and numerous tours, trails and destination marketing campaigns based on famous detectives. While there is a significant research tradition focussed on tourism, film, television and literature analysing this intersection between popular culture and tourist behaviour (d., Beeton, 2010), it has mostly focussed on the roles that film, television and literature play in encouraging and influencing tourist behaviour (cf., Earl, 2008; Beeton, 2005; Reijnders, 2009}. There has been considerably less attention paid to how popular culture and the arts portray tourists and tourism. According to Beeton (2010, p. 3) "popular mass media of the day constructs a social reality of our times". This argument, further explored by Wheeller (2009) in his discussion of tourism and the arts, suggests that popular culture and the arts may provide an alternative set of perspectives on tourists and tourism. The research study reported in this paper sought to explore this alternative view and examined a sample of 200 crime novels to describe the nature of representations of tourists and tourism.
