Abstract
[Extract] This book describes lucidly and engagingly the way in which women of Vanuatu, in the early 1990s, 'unfolded an aspect of their knowledge and practice (the making of woven and dyed leaf textiles) and laid it out in the national arena, asserting and redefining it for the first time as kastom' (p. xxxiv). Their action has potentially important political repercussions because, until then kastom - particular ways of knowing and the authority conveyed by them - belonged to men.
