Abstract

Heritage railways have experienced increasing popularity and represent settings for understanding and experiencing of industrial heritage and its authenticity. As such, the consumption of heritage railway attractions is a setting for creation and experiencing of 'value'. This paper explores the notion of value as determined by heritage railway attractions and examines ways of measuring value in these settings, with a particular focus on qualitative approaches. The investigation afforded strong evidence that tools such as the Activities, Settings, Experiences, and Benefits (ASEB) Grid Analysis are worthwhile instruments for measuring value of heritage railway attractions. In addition, the study suggests that further research can be directed at responses from visitors' and operators. A comparison between visitors and operators understanding affords important information and knowledge on the intensification of 'value' for all parties in the context of heritage railway attractions and, more broadly, in relation to attractions.
