Abstract

[Extract] Property management planning at the individual tenure level needs to be carried out in the context of broader catchment and regional planning if ecological sustainability is to be achieved. Using Cape York Peninsula as a case study this paper sets out a framework for integrating planning on individual tenures with planning at the catchment and regional scale. Individuals develop thorugh the property management planning process, a broader understanding of their current situation in relation to ecological sustainability. Indvidual stakeholders therefore, have a sound basis to enter into negotiations to resolve conflicts, which may arise between competing interests. The National Property Management Planning Campaign has been very successful at engaging land managers in planning at the individual tenure level. It has achieved this success by recognising that the problems facing agriculture require a focus on people rather than the traditional technical focus. Property Management Planning has developed a humanistic approach to facilitating change through learning. It uses whole systems strategic planning as its learning structure and adult learning practices in its delivery.
