Abstract

[Extract] Recent media comments by the newly-appointed Chair of the federal government's Indigenous Advisory Council ('IAC') has circled around Indigenous corporate governance. In particular, the comments have focused on the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations ('ORIC'), the federal government agency charged with the oversight and administration of the Corporations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2006 (Cth). This recent commentary signals that Indigenous corporate governance is likely to be a political priority at the federal level. It is an area which the authors believe requires further investigation particularly in the commercial context. The authors have commenced a research project aimed at considering the complex mix of legal, business and cultural issues that arise for Indigenous corporations, more specifically Indigenous social enterprises. This paper provides the context for this research project.
