[Extract] Why this paper? This paper is an attempt by a small public health unit, perhaps typical of many across Australia, to clarify its role and define its direction against a background of significant social, economic and political changes impacting the arena of public health. In doing so the focus is on exploring an area of renewed interest and investment - the social determinants of health - in the light of contemporary demands for developing an explicit evidence base for such interventions. This is an enormous and contentious field and this paper does not presume to be exhaustive; rather, it seeks to chart a territory that may reasonably be considered within the province of action of a small but specialised unit, and to be relevant and responsive to the needs of the population that this unit serves - in this case, far north Queensland The purpose is thus two-fold - first it has provided a mechanism through which the staff of the North Queensland Health Equalities Promotion Unit have and continue to reflect on its purpose and potential and second, it is hoped that it will encourage other similar organisations (as well as larger State and Commonwealth departments and institutions) to respond. Jn that sense the paper which follows is 'work in progress' which, we hope, will support mutual growth, understanding and cooperation.
