Abstract

Originating in Canadian from early years brain research, the Early Development Index is a population measure of young children's development based on a teacher-completed checklist. Five developmental domains are measured: physical health and wellbeing; social competence; emotional maturity; language and cognitive skills; communication skills and general knowledge. The 2006 implementation of the Australian Early Development Index to schools in the southern corridor of Cairns revealed vulnerabilities in some of these domains and highlighted the need to enhance local services and supports for young children and families in the area. This paper describes the process Cairns South Communities for Children Initiative, James Cook University, and Queensland Department of Tropical Population Health undertook in 2006 to collect data, the findings of the data, and the impact and possible impact on education and social services in the Cairns South area.
