Abstract
Reinventing the common and Managing Australia's environment are both products of Land and Water Australia's (formerly the Land and Water Resources Research and Development Corporation) Social and Institutional Research Program (SIRP). This is not insignificant. The SIRP has been dedicated since its inception in 1999 to researching the facilitation of effective participation in community-based natural resource management (NRM) programs; the characteristics of effective institutional arrangements for NRM; the use and evaluation of decision-making frameworks and tools for NRM; and the skills necessary for effective multidisciplinary research on natural resource issues. The products of this research have squarely been targeted at policy-makers, advisors and community groups. Irrespective of the merits, or otherwise, of SIRP and the priorities it has addressed, the framework that these have established must be considered when evaluating the particular contribution of these two books, both of which are concerned, in very different ways, with institutional arrangements for NRM.
