Abstract

[Extract] Conserving the world's forests and their biodiversity is a defining challenge of the current era. Natural forests, especially in the tropics, are home to a vast number of the Earth's species and provide a wide range of other environmental services - but forests are disappearing rapidly. This has been recognised in western popular culture and has led to a prolonged international effort to find and implement effective solutions. These efforts have involved technical, social, political and cross-disciplinary scientific efforts. In recent decades our technical understanding of the problem has advanced significantly. As a result forestry and related disciplines have had to constantly revise their core concepts in order to respond to changing perceptions, narratives and knowledge. But success over this period has been mixed - forest loss and degradation continues to threaten the Earth's biodiversity and environment. This volume presents selected key papers on the evolving concepts and on the ways that these challenges are being addressed today.

Our aim here is to deal with forest landscapes in a modern sense. We are not talking about forests and forestry in a narrow traditional sense, i.e. the management of stands of trees. Our landscape guided perspective requires us to recognise other types of land cover, land use and demands. The chapters indicate how and where solutions to some of the more pressing concerns may be found and highlight how forests relate to other components of the landscape in which they occur.
