Abstract

Little information has been previously known about the incidence of cancer in our Australian indigenous population. Accurate record keeping about cancer in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders has only become available in recent years through better identification on pathology forms and other documentation in state cancer registries (Stumpers & Thomson, 2009). Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders consist of 2.5% of the population yet they have much higher rates of lung, cervical and pancreatic cancer than other non-indigenous Australians (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare & Australasian Association of Cancer Registries 2012., 2012). Lung cancer is the number one cancer in this population and can be attributed to the high rates of smoking, which are double the smoking rates of non-indigenous people.
