Abstract

[Extract] Nursing practice in Australia is guided by the ANMC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council) National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse (2006). All nursing practice at any level is subject to the same guidelines and professional competency assessment. This chapter discusses rural and remote nursing in Australia in the context of the ANMC Competency Standards. The domains of professional practice, critical thinking and analysis, provision and coordination of care, and collaborative and therapeutic practice all guide the practice of nurses working in rural and remote areas.
