Abstract

[Extract] The term 'rural and remote nursing' refers to a vast range of very diverse nursing responsibilities, roles and philosophies, and is the subject of many discussions from which a range of definitions have resulted. Therefore, any discussion relating to this topic remains somewhat subjective and its interpretation is heavily influenced by perception. For instance, although the terms 'rural' and 'remote' invoke impressions of distance, in reality the communities, people and available health services vary greatly. Therefore, any discussion about rural and remote nursing requires awareness of specific areas to ensure accurate and consistent representation.
