Abstract
Progardes Desmanthus is a blend of Desmanthus bicornutus, D. leptophyllus and D. virgatus accessions selected from old abandoned legume trial plots in north and western Queensland. The name Progardes comes from Pro for Protein, Gar for Gardiner and Des for Desmanthus. Some 12,000 ha has been recently sown across northern Australia by a variety of techniches and into predominately semi-arid clay soil land types such as the Brigalow and Mitchell Grass Downs Bioregion.Plant densities of upto 7 plants/m2 one year after planting and steer liveweight gains of upto an additioal 40kg/head over grass only pasture have been recorded over a 90 day winter grazing period in Central Queensland. Progardes has the potential to improve livestock production in semi-arid clay soil regions where few if any other sown pasture legumes are adapted.
