Abstract

The growth and lipid content of Botryococcus braunii strain CHN 357 were sequentially examined at five temperatures (20, 23, 25, 27 and 30°C), five light intensities (30, 60, 100, 150 and 200 W m⁻²), and six salinities (0, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35, 0.50 and 0.70 M NaC1). Algal growth rate was highest at 23°C. In the light trial, the algal growth rate was greatest in cultures maintained at 30 and 60 W m⁻². Growth was greatest at a salinity of 0.15 M NaC1. The shortest generation time in the temperature, light, and salinity trials were 3.2 days at 23°C, 2.5 days at 60 W m⁻², and 2.0 days in 0.15 M NaC1. The total lipid content in the alga peaked at 23°C, at 60 W m⁻², and in 0.15 M NaC1. Overall, the results indicate that the optimum culture conditions or this strain are at 23°C, 30–60 W m⁻² and 0–0.15 M NaC1.
