Abstract
[Extract] The Resort Development Spectrum is a destination planning model that illustrates the relationship between growth and the operation of the economic market in the context of demand, supply, equilibrium and changing visitor markets. In its current stage of development the RDS describes growth in an Australian setting (Prideaux, 2000, 2004), and has not been generalized to other settings such as those where initial tourism growth is based on foreign visitors. In these settings destination development will take a different form, but still depends on the underlying interaction of demand and supply.
