Abstract
[Extract] While there is a plethora of books and writings covering health, medicine and nursing during the First World War, few cover the work and lives of nurses, their helpers and voluntary aid detachments (VADs) in as much detail as this text. The author has an erudite and interesting style of writing that encapsulates this detail.
