Abstract

Fe oxide–apatite(REE) (IOA) and the REE-apatite phosphate deposits of the Bafq district are hosted by Early Cambrian (528 Ma) rhyolitic rocks and by rhyolite-associated volcanosedimentary units. The rhyolites are part of an episode of rhyolite–spilitic basalt bimodal volcanism with rare undersaturated rocks (nephelinites or basanites) and minor andesites that were intruded by subvolcanic alkali leucogranites (524-529 Ma). The bimodal volcanism was followed by terminal alkali diabase dikes. Reconstruction of the regional and local geological events indicates a close link between the rhyolitic volcanism, the subsequent regional Na- and K-feldspar metasomatism, and the Fe oxide–apatite(REE) mineralization. The regional alkali metasomatism caused spilitization of the basalts and locally transformed the rhyolites to "keratophyres" and “albitites”. The alkali metasomatism was followed by a complex deposit scale, Ca(Mg)-rich, Fe-P-REE alteration with late REE(Th)-carbonate-silica overprinting and accumulation of 2 Gt, high-grade Fe oxide ore along the structurally controlled metallogenic province of Bafq. This sequence of events thus reflects a specific tectonomagmatic evolution of the Bafq zone, within the Early Cambrian Kashmar-Kerman magmatic arc, which was characterized by rifting episodes associated with alkali metasomatism and Fe oxideapatite (REE) mineralization.
