Abstract

[Extract] Antony Beevor's history of the Crete campaign, published in 1991 to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the battle of Crete, includes a trenchant indictment of Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Laycock's conduct during the evacuation from Sphakia. The indictment had already been prominently printed in The Spectator. The accusations range from fabricating an order allowing the Commandos to leave Crete 'early' to 'arrogantly disregarding' an order to provide cover for the evacuation.
