Abstract

This chapter explores the concept of playfulness. Four elements of playfulness: intrinsic motivation, internal control, suspension of unnecessary constraints of reality, and framing, are discussed against the contribution of the environment to children's play. What happens when playfulness is disrupted is then explored and illustrated using examples of autistic spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and physical disability.
