Abstract

The 2008 A-League Grand Final produced a dramatic and chaotic climax to the 2007-8 season. Down 1-0 with just seconds to go on the clock, the Central Coast Mariners were awarded a corner kick. Even goalkeeper, Danny Vukovic, run forward to provide an extra player in the penalty box. After the ball passed in front of the goal, the Central Coast players claimed it had hit the arm of one of the Newcastle Jets' defenders. Referee, Mark Shields, consulted with his assistant referees, while on television, replays were already showing that there had been a hand ball, and a potentially match equally penalty should have been awarded to the Central Coast. However, after his consultation, Shields did not award the penalty, and as a number of the Central Coast players remonstrated with the referee, Vukovic pushed Shields in the shoulder with a firm, intentional shove, though not one strong enough to push him over. Vukovic immediately headed for the dressing room, knowing that a red card was imminent.
