Abstract
The chapter examines the notion of ethnicity and draws on this to look at some of the areas in which ethnic identity in India is grounded. The chapter then goes on to present a short political history of India to provide a backdrop to the discussion of ethnic identity and politics in the Indian context. The strategies adopted by the Indian State to manage ethnic diversity and conflict are then analysed before looking at some of the issues of ethnic violence and separatist movements that emerge if these strategies are ineffective. Finally the State response to ethnic separatist movements is explored before the final section reflects on future of ethnic diversity in India.
