Abstract
[Extract] Further remarks are here offered on a couple of topics mentioned - but not explored in detail - in earlier chapters. These comments are based on my extensive fieldwork (extending over forty years) on Dyirbal, from north-east Australia, and (over twelve years) on Jarawara, belonging to the small Arawá family from southern Amazonia, Brazil. They concern using comitative and privative derivations for predictive possession (in δ1) and having an inalienable possessor as the head of a possessive NP (in δ2). To round out the volume, δ3 considers the semantic range, in English, of the verb own and various forms of possess. It then briefly reflects on the extent to which 'name', 'language', and 'land' may be regarded as being either possessed or owned within various types of culture.
