Abstract

[Extract] We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands Gumbaynggirr, Bundjalung and Yaegl people of the Mid North Coast North Coast of New South Wales. We pay our respects to Elders of the past, present and future for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes for Aboriginal Australians. We honour and respect their ongoing cultural and spiritual connections to this country. We aim to respect cultural heritage, customs and beliefs of all Aboriginal people.

In this colourful and informative documentary, presenter Alec Doomadgee meets with smokers, ex-smokers and health professionals to talk about how to quit smoking cigarettes. Along the way, Alec finds out some of the support, methods and medications available to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people "blow away the smokes".

This DVD was commissioned by the Mid North Coast Division of General Practice as part of the national indigenous quit smoking program.

Research Statement

Research Background	The aim of the Blow Away The Smokes DVD was to provide a culturally appropriate self-help resource. The content of the DVD was based on consultation with the No Smokes North Coast Steering Committee, and the local Aboriginal community and evidence from previous research. Script development was a collaborative process between the producer and the medical director, with feedback from representatives of the Aboriginal community. Anti-tobacco and cessation messages were designed to be positive and build efficacy. A professional Aboriginal presenter narrated the video and interacted with a range of trusted community members, Indigenous role models, and experts who presented anti-tobacco messages. Animated sections were included for visual impact: to entertain, educate and change the pace. Filming occurred over a 2 week period with strong input from Aboriginal community members across the mid-North Coast. The DVD was launched in December 2011 and distributed across the North Coast NSW through Aboriginal Medical Services, community organisations, and a dedicated web site. The DVD has received favourable reviews from both professionals and community members across Australia.
