Abstract

[Extract] In this excerpt from an interview published in a local Palauan newspaper, a representative from Pohnpei, in the Federated States of Micronesia, identifies the Festival of Pacific Arts as a site where participants confront profound existential contradictions in their attempts to reconcile tensions between tradition and modernity. Since 1972, the Festival has reunited delegations of dancers, musicians, artists, artisans and politicians from the member states of the Council of Pacific Arts in a different host country every four years. l In 2004, the small island state of Palau (Belau) with a population of 20,000, welcomed over 2,700 members from 26 other countries and territories of the Pacific: American Samoa, Australia,Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji Islands, Guam, Hawai'i, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Norfolk Island, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianna Islands, Papua New Guinea, Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Pitcairn Island, French Polynesia, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna. In addition, thirty dancers from Japan and a hundred performers representing Indigenous minorities in Taiwan, approximately 2% of the population of this country, were invited to attend.
