Abstract
[Extract] Football clubs have always worked very hard pre season to prepare players for the demands of the coming season. In more recent years, fitness testing has become part of this process during both pre season and also over the course of the competitive season. Fitness test results provide the coach with objective evidence on the fitness status of their players and help to identify areas in which players could improve. However, due to the quantity and congestion of fixtures during the competitive season, opportunities for routine fitness testing can be limited. Although it is unlikely that players regularly participating in games will experience a drop in fitness levels, the intense fitness demands of professional football may lead to suppression of the immune system, potentially leading to higher instances of illnesses such as upper respiratory tract infections (URTJ) as for example the common cold or a sore throat.
