Abstract

An automatic road sign recognition system identifies road signs from within images captured by an imaging sensor on-board of a vehicle, and assists the driver to properly operate the vehicle. Most existing systems include a detection phase and a classification phase. This paper classifies the methods applied to road sign recognition into three groups: colour-based, shape-based, and others. In this study, the issues associated with automatic road sign recognition are addressed, the popular existing methods developed to tackle the road sign recognition problem are reviewed, and a comparison of the features of these methods is given.
