Abstract

[Extract] The word terrorism tends to elicit a knee-jerk reaction from many people, including philosophers. But Virginia Held is too smart to react this way. She sets the word, the concept, the actions, and intentions in front of her readers. She turns it like a sculptor examining the fine detail on her work. If her analysis doesn't work, she tosses it away and begins again. Her examination of terrorism is like work by one of the great miniaturist painters. Held makes you consider the detail, and slowly she pulls you into the framework of her argument.
