Abstract
[Extract] This special issue of Empedocles arose out a conference that was held in 2008 at Monash University, Melbourne, on the theme of 'Paradox and Indirect Communication'. The one-day conference brought together a series of speakers interested in the way in which some of the most productive, creative and enduring forms of human communication are articulated through paradoxes. Through the medium of paradox, human beings communicate indirectly about matters that are among the most important in human lives. These things are often notoriously elusive – which is why they lend themselves to tacit, enigmatic and tangential methods of communicating.
