Abstract

Sodicity is generally associated with poor soil structure while, on the other hand, organic matter is generally associated with good soil structure. Although there is a large body of literature on the effects of organic matter and sodicity on structure individually, the interactions between organic matter and sodicity are much less well understood (Emerson, 1983; Emersonet al., 1986; Mullins et al., 1990; Churchman et at., 1993). In this chapter, the term structure will be defined (Section 4.2), followed by a brief discussion of the nature of soil organic matter and how it influences structure (Section 4.3). The effect of sodicity on soil structure is discussed in Chapters 5 and 6 and will not be further discussed here. Interactions between organic matter, sodicity, and soil structure will then be examined (Sections 4.4, 4.5, 4.6), and in the final Section (4.7), biological amelioration of sodic soils will be discussed.
