Abstract
[Extract] This is the inaugural volume of Archaeological Heritage the journal produced by the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Incorporated (AACAI). It marks another milestone in the development of consulting archaeology in Australia and recognizes that archaeological consultants are at the coal face of much of the archaeological work being undertaken in Australia and overseas and that we have a duty to consider, promote and analyze the outcomes of our work. Much has been written on the early development of consulting archaeology in Australia (see for example Smith 1994; Greer 1996a) and does not need to be repeated here. It is clear that Australia has played an important part in the worldwide development of archaeological and cultural heritage management, often referred to as Public Archaeology.
