Abstract

Forages are the main feed resource for ruminants in the tropical rangelands. The complex interaction among native and introduced species drives livestock production and the profile of greenhouse gas emissions from diverse and fragile rangeland farming systems. Consequently, a project strategy emphasising the antimethanogenic potential (i.e. amount of methane produced) of pasture species and their nutritive value is imperative to reduce the environmental impact of the industry, the energetic cost to the animal and to improve the livelihoods of widespread communities.
