While this chapter focuses on the 1980s and the prospects for industrial relations in the 1990s, it is useful to review the events that have led to Singapore's current industrial relations uniqueness. Unlike the other newly-industrialised Asian countries (NICs) of South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, Singapore possesses a labour movement that is able to comply with government directives and yet, it would seem, successfully socialise and re-socialise the workforce from which it must draw its vitality.
