Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive review of conservation information for Solomon Islands in support of Solomon Islands’ commitment towards the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). We provide a GAP analysis of the natural resources of Solomon Islands, reviewing both terrestrial and marine habitats, and the degree to which they fall under existing conservation management. The information is also used to identify potential areas for action based on two divergent scenarios: avoidance of conflict, and seeking out areas requiring imminent action.
Key recommendations from the study include:
• Developing a mechanism for coordinating and collecting information regarding local management efforts • Updating and improving habitat data collections • Collecting information regarding species distributions and ecosystem services • Investigating the potential effects of climate change • Collecting information regarding social linkages between communities • Evaluating that the results of the prioritization through community consultation
We also recommend supporting and reinforcing existing management areas and activities, and also increasing the effectiveness of local conservation efforts by coordinating local management activities.
