Abstract
The purpose of this manual is to provide instructions for the use of community mapping workshops and geographic information systems (GIS) to effectively engage Australian Indigenous communities in the planning and management of their Sea Country. This manual provides information about downloading satellite images from the internet, a process for community mapping workshops, and transferring data from paper maps into a GIS. A GIS is a system for storing, analysing and managing data which are spatially referenced to the earth. GIS is a technology that is used to make maps, and store information about locations, points or areas in a computer. There are many GIS software options available. In this training manual we use ArcMap 9.2.
