Abstract

[Extract] A 'death in custody' denotes a situation where a person dies in police or prison custody. Most deaths occur in prison custody and most are self inflicted. A death in prison custody includes deaths that occur in prison or in juvenile detention facilities, and deaths occur during transfer to and from such facilities or while in medical facilities under the prison authority.
