Chapter 40: All humans are sexual beings. Regardless of gender, age, race, socioeconomic status, re1igious beliefs, physical and mental health, or other demographic factors: we express our sexuality in a variety of ways throughout our lives. Human sexuality is difficult to define. Sexuality is an individually expressed and highly personal phenomenon whose meaning evolves from life experiences. Physiologic, psychosocial and cultural factors influence a person's sexuality and lead to the wide range of attitudes and behaviours seen in humans. There are no normal, universal sexual behaviours. Satisfying or 'normal' sexual expression can generally be described as whatever behaviours give pleasure and satisfaction to those adults involved, without threat of coercion or injury to self or others. What constitutes 'normal' sexual expression, however, varies among cultures and religions.
LEARNING OUTCOMES - Describe sexual development and concerns across the lifespan. - Define sexual health. - Discuss the varieties of sexuality. - Give examples of how the family, culture, religion and personal ethics influence one's sexuality. - Describe physiologic changes in males and females during the sexual response cycle. - Identify the forms of male and female sexual dysfunction. - Identify basic sexual questions the nurse should ask during client assessment. - Formulate nursing diagnoses and interventions for the client experiencing sexual problems. - Recognise health promotion teaching related to reproductive structures.
