Abstract
[Extract] In languages from the small Arawá family (spoken in Brazil and Peru), each free noun is classed as feminine (f) or masculine (m). There are also inalienably possessed nouns (PNs) which accompany a free noun and agree with it in gender. In proto-Arawá, each PN had distinct f and m forms, and this is maintained in most modern languages. However, in Jarawara and other dialects of the Madi language, there has been steady loss of gender marking on PNs — of the 175 PNs in my corpus, only 65 (37 %) maintain distinct f and m forms.
