This article seeks to demonstrate the power of linking social representations theory and sustainable livelihoods analysis. The joint use of these two conceptual schemes is supported by adopting an emic approach to the research process. The context of interest lies in assessing the future role of tourism in development as perceived by local communities. The study considers in turn the social representations theory and its application in tourism community futures studies and then the livelihoods framework and its practice in such studies. It is argued that social representations theory is valuable to understand how people "see" and organize their view of the tourism futures while the livelihoods framework provides the content defining perceptions and preferences. The emic approach offers a way to implement the theories and framework, particularly in cross-cultural studies as it helps elicit locally meaningful representations. Each section is briefly illustrated from the researchers' interests in "Post 80s" Tibetan youth and their views of tourism futures in that region but the wider application of the suggested linkage of the conceptual schemes holds diverse and generic possibilities in many communities across the globe.
