Abstract
This paper reports on the application of 3-dimensional discrete element modelling to the prediction of pertinent mechanical quantities relevant to belt feeders fitted to an industrial surge bin. In the present application particular attention was focussed on prediction of normal reactions and sliding velocities between the bulk solid and conveyor system. Excessive conveyor wear is an important industry problem and prediction of the 3-dimensional spatial reactions and tractions can be used as gauge to give insight into critical regions requiring attention.
