Abstract

New iron-making technologies have been studied in the last two decades as alternatives to the iron blast furnace. The Auslron® process uses multiple top submerged lances to inject air into a molten bath of iron ore, slag and coal to produce pig iron. A novel approach using thermistors to rapidly measure the responses at multiple positions in a water model of the Auslron® process to a pulse of hot water provided details of the mixing characteristics enabling a reactor model to be developed. A mixing model based on a series of stirred tanks was proposed based on observations from dye tracer studies fitted the thermal tracer results and gave a mixing time of 26 seconds, similar to that obtained experimentally. The use of multiple measuring positions also enabled the fine details of the mixing process in the cold model to be studied.
