Abstract

MicroelectromechanicaI systems (MEMS) devices are expected to revolutionise the biochip industry in applications such as drug detection, diagnostic devices, rapid chemical analyses, and high throughput screening. MEMS devices harnessing liquid drops of precise diameters offer the possibility of performing their functions with reduced energy costs. In this study, microchannels were fabricated using a mechanical micromachining approach to fabricate a V shaped T -junction of 250 Jlm width into a copper circuit board. The mechanical micromachining approach has many environmental benefits including minimal waste materials and by-products. Regular water drops were only formed in a stream of hexadecane when a surfactant, SP AN80, was added to the oil phase. The size of the water drops produced was found to decrease with increasing hexadecane flow rate. A high-speed video capture of the drop detachment showed that the roughness of the channels affected the position where necking of the drop occurred and hence, the detachment position.
