Abstract

As two practitioners working within the Queensland Department of Communities in the Mackay/Whitsunday Region we have amassed experiences and learnings in the application of family support frameworks in our Region. The Region in which we work covers eight local government shires in Queensland Australia, with diverse economic bases, ranging from the city of Mackay to hinterland farming communities, mining towns, coastal tourist centres and rural towns struggling with economic downturn. The Queensland Department of Communities maintains a particular interest in the link between family support and child protection outcomes. The number of child protection notifications to the department is increasing indicating that more families are facing complex challenges in their struggle to maintain appropriate and adequate care for their children. This paper outlines current literature and the current policy context of family support in the Queensland child protection system and discusses its application in Regional Queensland. Two regional examples of family support responses will be used to discuss the evolving process of success, challenges and learnings in matching family support policy directions with community need and capacity. The examples will demonstrate the impact of culture, aspirations, community/organisational capacity and service system capacity on organisations and workers seeking to provide vulnerable families with access to the right support at the right time.
